David Williams shot these over the course of a six-month residency with the art department of St Margaret’s School for Girls, Edinburgh, in 1984, teaching whilst working on his practice. For us it's not just the teenage attitude that appeals but the ever-present influence of uniforms on Le Kilt.

More than just a fly-on-the-wall documentary he built his images on the theme of ‘growing up’, capturing how pupils in different years are connected by the process of becoming more self-aware with age - the chaotic giddiness of a new girl offset by the restrained confidence of a sixth form leaver. Youth and maturity captured in the same portrait, often the same face.

Waterfront, 1985. Paperback. Very good condition, minor sun damage on back cover.

Lena Books is Le Kilt’s sister print space for research and reference. A shared resource for books and magazines straight from the shelves of our studio, launched to coincide with the opening of Le Kilt’s first concept store, Le Kilt Room.
