Walter Krane

Entitled The Delta Sacramento River, this 2013 oil on canvas landscape is by the artist Walter Krane (1938-2021). Born in Chicago in 1938, Walter Krane spent his childhood in Chandler, Arizona, where an early encounter with painter Charles Frederick Higham sparked a lifelong passion for art. Higham introduced him to the fundamentals of painting—from color mixing and brushwork to palette knife techniques—and a high school art teacher further nurtured his growing talent. Krane later studied architecture at Arizona State University, where courses in drawing, watercolor, gouache, and design sharpened his visual sensibility. Although his professional career ultimately led him into construction engineering, first in Southern California and later in Northern California after 1974, painting remained a constant creative pursuit. Following his retirement, he renewed his formal study at Diablo Valley College and devoted himself to painting, drawing inspiration from a lifetime of travel and observation. California, Europe, and the American West became enduring subjects, along with Native American culture, horses, working people, seascapes, and the landscapes that shaped his life.
