Rare Vintage 1945 The Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer – First Canadian Edition (McClelland & Stewart)

A remarkably unique piece of culinary history: a rare 1945 Canadian edition of The Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer. While original copies from this era are highly collectible, this specific volume was officially authorized, copyrighted, and distributed for the Canadian market by the historic McClelland & Stewart Limited in 1945.

It features the iconic blue-and-white diamond pattern cloth cover and the charming early subtitle: "A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with an Occasional Culinary Chat", along with early illustrations by the author’s daughter, Marion Rombauer Becker. This book stands as a fascinating cross-border cultural artifact, showing exactly what Canadian home cooks were using in their kitchens at the close of World War II.
