Against a ground of lustrous white porcelain, a brilliant persimmon tree is drawn.
Persimmons on the BranchEach persimmon is coloured in fresh gradations, and each leaf is drawn with its own shading of green, down to the holes left by insects. The branches carrying the heavy crop of fruit are full of life.
Kaki, and the Coming of Good FortuneThe Japanese word for persimmon,
kaki, is taken to echo an auspicious phrase meaning “joy arriving,” and so the tree has long been held to be a fortunate one, a sign that happy events are on their way.
