Against a ground of gold almost too bright to look at, vivid camellias bloom in full.
Gold Behind the ColoursGold with the look of the precious metal itself brings out the overglaze colours all the more — deep crimson, pale wisteria, indigo and jade.
The Camellia in JapanThe camellia is native to Japan, and nine poems in the
Man’yoshu sing of it. In the Muromachi period its treatment came under the influence of craft objects brought over from Ming China. Toyotomi Hideyoshi liked to use camellias in the tea ceremony, and thereafter the flower became important in tea. By the Edo period it was often taken as a subject in painting and craft, and it is loved still today.
