Refined gradations of indigo, purple and blue, outlined in gold decoration, open into blooming shobu (Japanese iris).
A Composition of RefinementThe refined composition of a large decorative plate may be called a sense of design rooted deep in the Japanese.
The Shobu, a Plant of Good FortuneIn China the
shobu was held to be an auspicious plant for boys, its leaves shaped like a sword and its distinctive fragrance said to drive off malign spirits. It is used at the Tango festival and appears in ukiyo-e prints, and has been loved since ancient times. Because the word
shobu also sounds like the word for a contest, it stands as a wish for a boy’s advancement in the world and for his health.
