Alocasia Batwing, aka Alocasia nycteris or Alocasia nycteris ‘Batwing’ is a distinctive tropical Alocasia prized for its broad, sculptural foliage and unmistakable bat like silhouette. Its dark green leaves spread outward in a wide, horizontal form, with deeply scalloped margins and pointed lobes that resemble the wings of a bat in flight. The foliage is thick and leathery with a soft, semi matte finish, giving the plant a bold architectural presence without the glossy look of many other Alocasias. Native to the humid tropical forests of Borneo, Alocasia nycteris naturally grows in shaded, damp understory conditions. Its species name, nycteris, means “bat,” a fitting reference to its unusual wing shaped leaves.
