Pinguicula Red Starfish, is a highly ornamental Mexican butterwort cultivar known for its unusual shape, rich colour, and semi bulb forming habit. Selected in 1994 at the Liberec Botanical Garden in the Czech Republic, it is a cross between Pinguicula moranensis and Pinguicula heterophylla. Its lance shaped leaves curve downward and can turn beautiful reddish violet tones under strong lighting, giving the rosette a starfish like appearance. As the plant matures, it can reach an impressive size for a Pinguicula. During winter dormancy, it may form a partially subterranean, bulbous rosette similar to P. heterophylla, making it especially unique among tropical Pinguicula hybrids. At the beginning of the growing season, it produces sterile blue violet flowers. Slow growing, distinctive, and not easily propagated from leaf pullings, Pinguicula Red Starfish is a true collector’s butterwort with standout character.
