It was time for a change.
A couple of years ago, working around old injuries had left my training feeling boring and uninspired. I needed a new challenge—something that would keep my teeth sharp. On May 1, 2020, I committed to training with a weight vest for 30 days: squats, push-ups, and pull-ups or chin-ups, twice a day, every single day.
A 30-day challenge turned into my new training obsession.
I called it WALRUS training—the fatter, grosser cousin of the Navy SEAL. I anointed myself a Suburban Commando: able to handle any physical task a middle-aged man might be asked to do.
WALRUS training is full-body weight-vest training that can be as simple or creative as you want it to be. Start with the basics and expand from there:
Put on a 20-pound weight vest and build your body and spirit.
The WALRUS Patch represents the training, the challenge, and the Suburban Commando mindset. Wear it as a reminder that effective training doesn’t have to be complicated—it just has to be done.
