Interscope Vinyl Collective - October Vinyl of the Month
One of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time, blink-182 stickman Travis Barker has always been a restless musical multihyphenate. And all of that coalesced in his 2011 debut album blending hip-hop, rock, R&B, and dance. Co-produced by Barker alongside RZA, Pharrell, and Kid Cudi, the album features a murderers' row of all-star guests, including Raekwon, Tom Morello, Snoop Dogg, and Ludacris, among many others.
Slash provides a Latin flavor on “Saturday Night,” while Yelawolf, Twista, Busta Rhymes, and Lil Jon explode speakers on the propulsive hit “Let’s Go.” Meanwhile, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor rips through the heavy, yet melodic “On My Own” and Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz, and Game highlight both themselves and the drums on the title track.
Barker has made the kit his life — whether it's with blink-182, his own projects, or producing for others. This album, though, remains the culmination of all the work he'd done up until this point. “I think there was a period of time where people were like, ‘What is he doing?’” Barker told Rolling Stone in 2011 of the album’s genre-hopping nature. “But it was natural for me.”
