This striking painted Indian panel has been created using an old wooden door, giving the piece a wonderful sense of age and character. Three expressive tigers, painted in a naïve style amongst a dense arrangement of trees, leaves and foliage, all set against a vibrant red ground.
Each tiger has been depicted in a wonderfully naïve folk-art style, with bold black stripes, exaggerated features and animated expressions. The composition follows the tall proportions of the original door, with the tigers arranged one above another amongst twisting branches and vegetation.
The aged timber, irregular surface and areas of wear remain clearly visible beneath the painted decoration, adding texture and individuality. Its unusual proportions make this a particularly effective decorative panel for a narrow wall, hallway or alongside a doorway.
