This finely detailed brass figure depicts Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and one of the most revered figures in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Known as Chenrezig in Tibet, Avalokiteśvara embodies compassion and is understood as a bodhisattva who works for the liberation of all sentient beings.
Here Avalokiteśvara is seated in a meditative posture upon a double lotus throne, richly adorned with jewellery and an elaborate crown. His lowered right hand is held in Varada Mudra, the gesture of generosity, compassion and the granting of blessings, while his left hand holds a small vessel or bowl.
The warm brass finish and intricate detailing of the crown, jewellery, robes and lotus base make this a particularly attractive small devotional figure.
