An antique hand-colored gravure, or engraving, after master Claude Lorrain, engraved by Richard Earldom (1743 - 1822), and published from the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. This elegant antique hand-colored engraving captures a luminous Mediterranean harbor scene with graceful architecture, sailing vessels, and finely rendered figures animated by delicate washes of color.
It is identified as No. 198 in a series reproducing original artworks preserved in that celebrated collection stewarded by the Duke of Devonshire. The engraving is presented within a richly carved and distressed giltwood frame, whose later decorative treatment, characteristic of mid-20th-century studios such as Sungott Art Studios, enhances its patinated, collected character and gives the work its due presence of an Old World object.
What an incredible piece of history to hang in your home!
