The ‘Drab Topper’ was conceived in the 19th century as an alternative to the lavish French silk top hat. Originally manufactured in England utilising the abundance of fine quality English wool - a boost to local industry. Prince Philip was a great advocate of British industry and proudly donned the hat for Ascot and the Royal enclosure shortly after the coronation
