Scandia Juniper, commonly listed botanically as Juniperus sabina ‘Skandia’, creates a low, spreading layer of green to gray-green foliage. Its fine-textured branches bring year-round structure to sunny slopes, broad borders, and rock gardens.
Picture its branching growth softening the edge of a stone bed or connecting a group of upright shrubs. Give it room to broaden, and it can become a useful evergreen backdrop without blocking the planting behind it.
USDA zones: 3–7. Published recommendations vary; Conservation Garden Park uses zones 4–7. Choose a locally suitable site, especially at the cold edge of the range.
Mature planning size: Approximately 12–18 inches tall and 8–10 feet wide, following cultivar-specific extension guidance. Final dimensions vary with age and conditions. Allow for the broad spread beside paths and neighboring plants rather than treating this as a tiny edging shrub.
Choose 3 Gallon or 5 Gallon. These labels describe the offered nursery sizes, not mature dimensions or guaranteed delivery heights.
Allow the natural spread to develop and use selective trimming where needed. Keep weeds managed while plants fill in; coverage is not immediate. On slopes, planting can contribute to groundcover over time but does not replace appropriate measures for unstable soil or severe erosion.
Avoid overwatering. Wet, poorly drained conditions can lead to root rot, and junipers can also experience tip or needle blights and insect pests. Check plants periodically rather than assuming low maintenance means no care.
The berry-like cones are ornamental, not culinary berries. Do not harvest this plant for food.
Choose Scandia Juniper for low evergreen structure in a sunny, well-drained space with room to spread.
