Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle: Bright Foliage & Cascading Texture

Light up a partly sunny border with Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida 'Golden Glow'). This foliage-focused shrub combines small leaves with a dense, naturally arching and cascading habit. Fresh chartreuse growth adds a bright accent among darker green plants, while its shape can be left relaxed or trimmed for a more formal look.

Picture a soft sweep of golden-green foliage beside a garden path, or a neatly shaped low hedge framing your favorite planting bed. Thunderbolt offers two different looks from the same versatile shrub, depending on how you choose to maintain it.

Why Choose Thunderbolt?

  • Bright new growth: Chartreuse foliage provides contrast and can deepen toward green during summer.
  • Flexible form: Enjoy its natural cascading shape or trim it into a tidy hedge.
  • Manageable mature footprint: Approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide when allowed to grow naturally.
  • Shrub, not a climbing vine: Useful for borders, hedging, and accent plantings without a trellis.

Growing Zones & Planting Requirements

  • USDA hardiness zones: 5–9, following Bloomin' Easy's cultivar rating.
  • Mature size: Approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide. Pruning affects maintained size and shape.
  • Sunlight: Part sun, approximately 3–4 hours daily, following the grower's recommendation.
  • Soil: Average to organically rich, well-drained soil with moderate moisture.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment and dry weather, adjusting to soil moisture rather than allowing the roots to remain waterlogged.
  • Seasonal foliage: Evergreen to semi-evergreen depending on climate and exposure. Year-round leaf retention and constant chartreuse color are not guaranteed.

Choose Your Plant Size

Available in 2 Gallon and 3 Gallon nursery containers. Gallon measurements describe container size, not a guaranteed plant height or mature dimensions. Select the size that suits your planting project.

Shaping & Seasonal Care

Leave the shrub untrimmed for a relaxed, arching display, or shape it as needed for a more formal planting. Light tip pruning in late winter or early spring can encourage denser growth. Allow space for the natural 3–4-foot spread unless you plan to maintain a narrower hedge.

For container growing, choose a roomy pot with drainage holes and monitor moisture more closely than for an in-ground plant. Container roots may need additional protection in cold weather. Foliage color and winter appearance vary with local growing conditions.

Choose your preferred available size and bring bright foliage and adaptable structure to a partly sunny garden.
