Trident Java Fern is one of those aquarium plants that's pretty hard to mess up! If you're just getting into live plants, this is a great one to start with. It has unique, narrow leaves with forked tips that give it a completely different look from your typical Java Fern.
This plant does great in low lighting and doesn't require CO2, making it perfect for beginner and low-tech planted tanks. Like other Java Ferns, Trident grows from a rhizome, so you'll want to make sure you don't bury it in your substrate. Instead, attach it to rocks or driftwood, or leave the rhizome exposed with just the roots tucked into the substrate.
You may notice some older leaves turning black or breaking down as the plant adjusts to your aquarium. While some leaf melt can be normal, Java Fern can also produce little baby plants right on its leaves! Once those baby plants develop roots, they can be separated and grown into new plants.
Be sure not to bury the rhizome when planting Java Fern, as this can cause it to rot. We recommend doing additional research on your plants to make sure you're providing the best care for them!
