Cy Twombly Jr. (1928–2011) was an influential American painter, sculptor, and photographer known for his distinctive style that combined graffiti-like marks, calligraphic gestures, classical mythology, and poetry. Living much of his life in Italy, he fused the energy of American Abstract Expressionism with the rich cultural history of the Mediterranean.

Major Work: The Blackboard Paintings (1966–1972)
Created on gray backgrounds, these works feature rhythmic, looping white marks made with wax crayons or oil sticks. Inspired by cursive handwriting, the paintings emphasize movement and gesture over readable language, creating a sense of pure visual rhythm.
