Waku · Ai indigo. Waku is woven in tatewaku, the “rising steam” pattern of Japan’s Heian-era court. Paired lines swell apart and draw back together as they climb, like vapor rising, a motif worn by nobility and long associated with good fortune on the rise. It is set in ai, the deep indigo so tied to Japanese craft that it became known as Japan blue. Tone-on-tone and quiet from a distance, the waves come alive up close.
