North Korea remains one of the world's most isolated countries, where a strict dictatorship continues to limit contact with the outside world. In Waiting for the Rainbow, Xiomara Bender offers a rare and deeply human portrait of its 26 million inhabitants. Through powerful photography, she captures everyday life while revealing subtle signs of social change reflected in people's expressions, confidence, and personal style.

Having traveled to North Korea nine times over the past decade, Bender seeks to challenge widespread misconceptions about the country. Accompanied by thoughtful, understated texts, her photographs provide an unflinching yet empathetic look at life under state control, inviting readers to reflect on the slow and often imperceptible transformation of one of the world's most enigmatic societies.
