TRANSLUCENT DRIFTER OF INLAND WATERS

❃ The freshwater or river jellyfish (Craspedacusta sowerbii), also known as the peach blossom jellyfish, is a fascinating and delicate hydrozoan native to the calm, freshwater rivers, lakes, and flooded quarries of the Yangtze River basin in China. Now found in slow-moving freshwater systems worldwide, this mesmerizing creature measures about the size of a coin—roughly one inch across—featuring a translucent, bell-shaped body with a delicate whitish-green tint.

❃ Unlike marine jellyfish, freshwater jellyfish possess a distinctive anatomical structure called a velum, a thin muscular shelf on the underside of the umbrella that helps pump water for controlled, rhythmic propulsion. Encircling the translucent bell margin are hundreds of fine, hair-like tentacles of varying lengths equipped with specialized stinging cells called nematocysts, which gently paralyze microscopic zooplankton, water fleas, and aquatic larvae.

❃ River jellyfish spend most of their life cycle as microscopic, dormant polyps attached to underwater plants, rocks, and woody debris, only transforming into free-swimming medusae when summer water temperatures rise. Known in ancient Chinese folklore as "peach blossom fish" because their sudden blooms coincided with the blooming of riverbank peach trees, these gentle drifters are rare indicators of pristine, unpolluted waterways. Ethereal, glassy, and wonderfully peaceful, the river jellyfish is a captivating wonder of the freshwater world.
