GLASS-WINGED ACROBAT OF THE GARDEN

❃ The pellucid hawkmoth (Cephonodes hylas), also known as the coffee bee hawkmoth, is a captivating day-flying moth native to the tropical and subtropical forests, coastal regions, and gardens of Africa, Asia, and Australasia. Reaching a wingspan of up to three inches, this remarkable insect is celebrated for its plump, olive-green and gold body, bold reddish-maroon abdominal band, and striking pair of crystal-clear, transparent wings.

❃ When the moth first emerges from its cocoon, its delicate wings are lightly covered in fine, opaque scales. Within minutes of taking its maiden flight, these loose scales shed away completely, leaving behind fully transparent, glassy wing membranes. This pellucid, see-through design functions as an ingenious form of camouflage, making the moth difficult for predatory birds and lizards to track against foliage while buzzing from blossom to blossom.

❃ Often mistaken for a bumblebee or a hummingbird, the pellucid hawkmoth is an exceptionally agile aerialist capable of hovering in mid-air and darting swiftly in any direction. Using its long, flexible proboscis, it drinks deep nectar from tubular flowers while airborne, pollinating garden blossoms, fruit trees, and coffee plants. Graceful, masterfully disguised, and vibrantly colored, the pellucid hawkmoth is one of the insect world's most dazzling and industrious flyers.
