PINK OF THE WETLANDS

❃ The roseate spoonbill is one of the Americas’ most unmistakable wading birds, dressed in brilliant shades of pink with a long, flattened bill shaped like a spoon. Found in wetlands from the southern United States and Caribbean through Central and South America, these striking birds inhabit mangroves, marshes, lagoons, and shallow coastal waters. Their rosy feathers aren’t just for show—the coloration comes partly from pigments called carotenoids obtained through their diet.

❃ That extraordinary spoon-shaped bill is a specialized feeding tool. Rather than hunting primarily by sight, roseate spoonbills wade through shallow water while sweeping their partially open bills from side to side. Sensitive receptors help them detect small fish, shrimp, crustaceans, and aquatic insects, allowing the bill to snap shut when prey is encountered—even in cloudy water where seeing beneath the surface can be difficult.

❃ Roseate spoonbills are highly social birds, often feeding and nesting alongside other wading species in large colonies. Although their vivid plumage once made them targets of the feather trade, populations in parts of their range recovered after receiving protection. With spectacular pink feathers, an unmistakable bill, and a wonderfully unusual feeding style, the roseate spoonbill brings a splash of tropical color wherever it goes.
