Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) Giant Wings
Each winter, humpback whales make one of the world’s great migrations, travelling north from their Antarctic feeding grounds along Australia’s coastline. They pass the east coast on their journey to warmer tropical waters, where they mate and give birth. Mothers and calves later make the long journey south to Antarctica, where the whales feed during summer. Humpbacks are famous for their complex songs — males can sing for hours, and songs gradually change from year to year, and each humpback has a unique pattern on the underside of it’s tail fluke, which researchers use like a fingerprint to identify individuals.
