The fig tree (Ficus carica) is a rewarding fruit plant that grows well in pots and can produce sweet, juicy figs at home. Its large, lobed leaves also make it a handsome feature plant.

How to Care for Your Plant

• Light: Full sun, at least 6 hours a day. A sunny balcony, patio or garden is ideal. If kept indoors, place it by the brightest window.
• Watering: Water deeply when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry. In hot weather this may be daily. Avoid waterlogging, as figs dislike wet roots.
• Soil: Loose, well-draining soil. Repot into a bigger pot as the tree grows.
• Fertiliser: Feed every 2–3 weeks with a fertiliser for fruiting plants to encourage fruit.
• Pruning: Trim long or crossing branches to keep the tree compact and encourage new fruiting shoots.

Tip: Harvest figs when they feel soft and droop slightly on the stem. They do not ripen further after picking.
