THE PIONEER OF THE MOVING IMAGE

Joseph Plateau (1801 - 1883) was a Belgian physicist whose research into visual perception laid the foundations for film, television and animated gifs. In 1832, he was one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image. To do this, he used counter-rotating disks with repeated images drawn with small increments of movement, using the persistence of vision principle to create an optical illusion of motion, inadvertently ushering in the era of moving images. He called this device the Phenakistiscope.

The flip book comes with an Augmented Reality feature, that you can visualize when scanning the front cover with your smartphone or tablet: a 3 minutes micro-documentary about Plateau's life, his background and his most outstanding work. To access the AR content, simply scan the QR code included on the slipcase, install the Artivive App, open it and view the flip book on your screen.
