Dimplex Nova 28" Multi-Fire XHD Plug-In Electric Firebox - Acrylic Ice (XHD28G) FAQ
Does the Dimplex XHD28G require hardwiring or a dedicated circuit?
No. The XHD28G is a plug-in unit that connects to any standard 120V household outlet, drawing 12.5 amps at 1,500 watts. Because it's near the upper limit of a standard 15-amp circuit, we recommend plugging it into a dedicated outlet that isn't shared with other high-draw appliances to avoid tripping the breaker when the heater is running.
Can I run the flame effect without turning on the heat?
Yes. The flames and acrylic ice media bed lighting operate completely independently of the heating element, so you can enjoy the visual ambiance year-round — even in summer — without warming the room. The LED flame display uses very little electricity, making no-heat operation extremely economical.
What are the rough opening dimensions for built-in installation?
The required framing/rough opening is 26 12/16" W x 23 1/16" H x 8" D. The firebox itself measures 27 3/8" W x 23 1/2" H x 7 1/4" D. Always reference the official Dimplex installation manual for clearances, combustible material requirements, and outlet placement before framing.
How realistic are the flames compared to a real wood fire?
The Multi-Fire XHD is Dimplex's flagship LED flame technology, featuring tall, full flames with independent speed and brightness control. Combined with the sparkling acrylic ice media bed and five accent colors plus Prism mode, the effect is highly contemporary and dramatic — closer to a modern linear gas fire than a traditional wood-burning look. For a more traditional log appearance, the XHD28L log variant is also available.
Is the Dimplex XHD28G safe to install in a bedroom or media wall?
Yes. The firebox uses a cool-glass front and a ceramic heating element with front-top venting, so it stays safe to touch around the edges and viewing area. It's commonly installed in bedrooms, living rooms, and media walls. Always maintain manufacturer-specified clearances from combustible materials such as mantels, shelving, and TVs above the unit.
What's included in the box and is anything else needed for installation?
The package includes the 28" Multi-Fire XHD firebox, the acrylic ice media, and the multi-function remote control. For a built-in install you'll need to frame the rough opening, provide a 120V outlet inside or adjacent to the cavity, and supply your own surround/mantel or media wall finish materials.
Can the XHD28G be used outdoors or on a covered patio?
No. The Dimplex Multi-Fire XHD series is rated for indoor use only. Outdoor moisture and temperature swings can damage the electronics and void the warranty. For outdoor applications, Dimplex offers dedicated outdoor-rated electric fireplaces.
What kind of warranty and support does this unit come with?
The XHD28G is backed by a 2-year limited manufacturer's warranty from Dimplex covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal residential use. The unit is certified by major North American safety standards (CSA/ETL). Always register your product with Dimplex after purchase to streamline any future warranty claims.
