This vintage Chinese covered basket combines woven rattan and bamboo construction with painted decoration and the character of an authentically aged surface.

The exterior is particularly decorative, with repeating painted scroll motifs encircling the body in warm ochre and golden tones. Additional geometric bands, including a Greek-key-style pattern and zigzag border, articulate the lower portion of the basket. Darker woven accents create further contrast between the decorative registers.

A tall arched carrying handle rises gracefully from the sides of the basket. Formed from slender bent strips, the handle incorporates a woven central grip with repeating geometric motifs, while small painted designs decorate the exposed wood along the sides.

The basket opens to reveal a spacious interior and would work beautifully as a decorative storage piece displayed on a console, chest, shelving unit or large tabletop. Its warm color, intricate weaving and graphic painted ornament give it considerable visual character from every angle.
