‘Dense Jade’ Cryptomeria is a small evergreen conifer with a narrow, pyramidal form. Its tiny, soft needles are held in a braid-like manner close to the branches, giving it a unique ornamental quality. In spring, the new growth emerges light green, then turns a rich, jade green in summer, followed by bronze-purple color in winter.
Best grown in full sun with protection from harsh winds, ‘Dense Jade’ prefers rich, moist conditions and may struggle in hot, polluted areas. A low maintenance tree that rarely needs pruning, it’s easy to grow and long lived for decades of enjoyment.
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Plant in rich, slightly acidic soil. Amend poor soils with compost or organic matter. Spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree after planting.
2. Watering: Water deeply throughout the first two growing seasons to establish roots. Water when the top 2” are dry. Once established, water in times of dry weather.
3. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed to remove dead or diseased growing. Light shearing may be done in early spring.
4. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer for conifers in early spring.
