This upright seedless flowering cherry tree develops a narrow, columnar form that fits neatly into smaller yards and constrained landscapes. Known as one of the most beautiful flowering cherries, ‘Spire’s’ light pink flowers open in mid-April along bare stems and attract early season pollinators. As flowers start to fade, rich green leaves emerge which provide shade through summer before turning reddish-orange-purple in fall.
‘Spire’ is a practical choice for street tree use under utility lines or as a small shade tree. Adaptable to acidic or alkaline soils, it performs well in climates with mild summers and benefits from supplemental water in times of drought or high heat. When given good care, it tends to be less prone to the disease and insects that bother other types of flowering cherries.
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site in full sun with well-draining soil. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the root flare level with the surrounding ground. After planting, spread a 3” layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back several inches from the trunk.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it tolerates periods of drought, though deep watering during prolonged heat supports overall health and longevity.
3. Pruning: Prune lightly to remove damaged, crossing, or crowded branches and to maintain its columnar shape. Pruning after flowering or during dry summer weather is ideal. Although it withstands severe pruning, routine light trimming is preferable.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak or a soil test indicates a need. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage soft, overly vigorous growth.
