Star Anise is a star-shaped seed pod with a deep brown coloring and hard, woody texture. The best uses for star anise are in sweet and savory dishes, including soups, stews, curries, and baked goods. Star Anise's distinctive aroma is derived from an essential oil called anethole, which is also found in fennel and aniseed.
