The Virunga Mountains, a range of dormant volcanoes bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda, is home to the world's smallest population of mountain gorillas. Despite facing threats such as war, hunting, habitat destruction, and disease, the mountain gorilla subspecies, discovered in 1902, has been successfully preserved through conservation efforts. This is a great achievement, considering the once bleak outlook for the subspecies just a few decades ago.
