The Hadrien Table Lamp started from two kinds of old Roman stone: the column drums left lying in the grass at ancient sites, and the cone-shaped stone posts that still stand at street corners in Rome, put there long ago to keep cart wheels off the walls. Both are cut from the same pale travertine, pitted and worn smooth at the edges. We took those two shapes, a short column and a squat cone, as the bases, and topped each one with a wide, plain fabric shade.
The base is cut from natural travertine. Its veining, color and open pores differ on every lamp, so no two bases look exactly the same.
