The Sorewyn Table Lamp started from an old wooden chess set left out on the porch table of a beach house, its round-headed pieces and tall, waisted ones worn smooth from summers of play. We turned the lamp bases the same way, one stacked and rounded, one slim at the waist and wide at the foot. Above them we set shades of thin shell, the kind once used in place of glass in seaside windows. Lit at dusk, the shell glows pale and pearly over the dark wood, like that porch after the sun went down.
The shade is made from natural shell and the base from wood. The color and markings of each piece of shell, and the grain of the wood, differ on every lamp, so no two look exactly the same.
