An exhibit in Denver, Colorado presented the perfect opportunity for me to explore my conceptions—and misconceptions—of the American West. Many hours watching old Clint Eastwood westerns served as the major part of my "research". At the time, Denver was blanketed with (and paralyzed by) several feet of snow, so I determined that each quilt would feature white on white backgrounds. Most of the fabrics used in this series came from an old-school fabric store in Bridgeport CT that was closing. I also incorporated curtain fabrics, an old rice sack, and other treasures from the flea market.

One-off quilts like this start their life as sketches to work out ideas and designs, then I work full-scale on the wall with the fabrics since they play such an important role in the design. The final step (before quilting) is to stitch the top together as visualized, which is like assembling a puzzle.
