The USMC Pile Lined Cap was a substantial item that was unusually well‐made for its type in terms of quality and versatility. It had a number of features that allowed for its effective use in varying temperature and weather conditions. Among these were large ear flaps that could be tied around the chin or across the top of the cap, a drawstring around the face opening, a protective strap that could be buttoned in place over the nose and mouth, a rear wind flap that could be opened or closed, and finally a folding front visor. It was a notable improvement over the electrified lambskin type that preceded it and yet less expensive to produce.
