Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) – Premium White Pigment

TerraChrom Titanium Dioxide is a high-performance white mineral pigment valued for its exceptional opacity, brightness, and covering power.

Titanium dioxide is widely used to produce brilliant whites and light pastel tones. Its strong light-scattering properties provide excellent hiding power, improving the opacity and brightness of paints and coatings.

This high-purity rutile titanium dioxide pigment contains at least 92.8% TiO₂ and is readily wetted and dispersed in a variety of paint and coating systems. Its excellent colour stability and weather resistance make it suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Key Features

  • Exceptional whiteness and opacity

  • Very high tinting strength

  • Excellent colour stability

  • Excellent weather resistance

  • Readily wetted and dispersed

  • Compatible with water-based and oil-based paints

  • Suitable for interior and exterior applications*

*The performance and durability of the finished coating depend on the binder, formulation, substrate, and application conditions.

Recommended Uses

Titanium dioxide can be used in a wide range of paint and coating applications, including:

  • Acrylic, oil, and watercolour paints

  • Limewash and mineral paints

  • Decorative plasters and stucco

  • Concrete and cement colouring

  • Primers, coatings, and sealers

  • Interior and exterior decorative finishes

It is commonly added to improve coverage and opacity, helping paints and coatings achieve a brighter, more uniform appearance.

Using Titanium Dioxide in Paint

Titanium dioxide is the primary white pigment used in many paint and coating formulations. It produces a bright, clean white and can also be used to lighten other colours and create soft pastel shades.

Increasing the amount of titanium dioxide can improve the whiteness and opacity of a paint, although the final result depends on the binder, pigment concentration, and overall formulation.

Suggested starting quantities for natural paints:

  • 20–40 mL per litre of paint: For subtle lightening or a modest increase in opacity.

  • 40–75 mL per litre of paint: For a stronger white or increased covering power.

For formulations measured by weight, 5% pigment by weight can be used as an initial trial concentration, with adjustments based on the results. Higher concentrations, including 10%, may be evaluated where the binder can accommodate the additional pigment.

These quantities are practical starting points for small-batch testing, not universal dosage requirements or established maximum limits. Different binders have different pigment capacities, and adding excessive pigment may affect the paint's adhesion, durability, or finish.

Mixing Example

For 1 litre of water-based natural paint:

  1. Measure approximately 40 mL of titanium dioxide powder into a small mixing container.

  2. Add approximately 40 mL of lukewarm water, a little at a time, stirring continuously to form a smooth paste.

  3. Mix thoroughly until the pigment is evenly dispersed and free of visible lumps. Add a small amount of additional water if needed to achieve a workable consistency.

  4. Gradually incorporate the pigment paste into 1 litre of prepared paint, stirring thoroughly to distribute it evenly.

  5. Apply a small test sample and allow it to dry completely before evaluating the whiteness and opacity.

If a brighter or more opaque finish is desired, gradually increase the pigment concentration in subsequent test batches.

Note: This mixing method is intended as a practical starting point for compatible water-based natural paints. Results will vary depending on the binder and formulation. For oil-based paints, disperse the pigment using an appropriate compatible medium rather than water.

Creating the Perfect White

If you wish to create your own custom white shade, start with an untinted base paint and add titanium dioxide gradually.

  1. Prepare a small test batch.

  2. Allow the paint to dry fully before evaluating the colour.

  3. Adjust the pigment concentration until the desired brightness and opacity are achieved.

Keeping notes of your pigment ratios will make it easier to reproduce the same colour later.

Safety

Titanium dioxide is a fine mineral powder that may produce airborne dust during handling.

  • Avoid breathing dust.

  • Minimize dust generation and work in a well-ventilated area.

  • Use appropriate respiratory protection when necessary.

  • Avoid contact with eyes and wash hands after handling.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

Refer to the current TerraChrom Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete handling and safety information.
