The First Yellow Cosmos — A Rare & Groundbreaking Garden Flower

For decades, cosmos came in pink, white, and red — and that was that. Then 'Xanthos' arrived and changed everything. The world's first true yellow cosmos, 'Xanthos' produces soft, creamy lemon-yellow blooms that are unlike anything else in the cosmos world — delicate, luminous, and utterly captivating. If you want a conversation piece that also happens to be beautiful, easy to grow, and a magnet for pollinators, 'Xanthos' belongs in your garden. Botanical Interests brings you this groundbreaking variety in a non-GMO, open-pollinated form.

Cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus x bipinnatus) 'Xanthos' is an All-America Selections winner celebrated for its breakthrough color — a soft, warm yellow that's completely new to the cosmos palette. Its compact, bushy habit and semi-double blooms make it as versatile in containers and borders as it is in cutting gardens, while its continuous blooming from midsummer through frost ensures a long season of color.

Why You'll Love It

  • World's first yellow cosmos — a true horticultural breakthrough; soft creamy-yellow blooms unlike any other cosmos variety
  • All-America Selections winner — recognized for outstanding garden performance and novelty
  • Compact, bushy habit — tidy plants stay 18–24 inches tall; ideal for containers, borders, and smaller garden spaces
  • Semi-double blooms — lush, layered petals add extra texture and visual interest compared to single-flowered cosmos
  • Pollinator magnet — butterflies and bees are drawn to the soft yellow blooms throughout the season
  • Long blooming season — continuous flowers from midsummer through the first hard frost
  • Non-GMO & open-pollinated — save seeds year after year

Growing Tips

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors after frost danger has passed in a full-sun location. Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and thin or transplant to 12–18 inches apart. Like all cosmos, 'Xanthos' prefers lean, well-drained soil — avoid rich or heavily fertilized soil, which promotes foliage over flowers. Water until established, then water sparingly; cosmos is drought-tolerant once growing. Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season.
