No shock, no static. This collar uses a beep, vibration and citronella spray only.

Most automatic bark collars have one sensor — a microphone — which means they can be triggered by another dog barking outside, a door slamming, or loud traffic. The Calmdogs Smart uses dual-signal detection, designed to reduce false triggers from noise that isn't your dog barking. That distinction matters if you live somewhere with ambient noise, have more than one dog, or have had bad experiences with collars that seemed to fire randomly.

Five modes and how to choose between them

The M button on the collar cycles through five response modes. One sensitivity dial (0–5) controls how quickly the collar responds — specifically, how many barks within a ten-second window it takes to trigger:

  • Level 1 — Beep only (5 barks in 10 seconds)
  • Level 2 — Vibration only (4 barks in 10 seconds)
  • Level 3 — Beep + Spray (3 barks in 10 seconds)
  • Level 4 — Beep + Vibration (2 barks in 10 seconds)
  • Level 5 — Beep + Spray + Vibration (1 bark in 10 seconds)

Setting 0 is a test mode — useful for checking the collar is working without putting it on your dog. Start on Level 1 or 2 and move up only if your dog isn't responding. Most dogs don't need Level 5; the temptation to start high because you want quick results usually backfires.

The auto-pause — why it matters

If the collar triggers six times in a row, it automatically pauses for 30 seconds. This is a feature worth paying attention to: a dog that's in an anxious or highly aroused state doesn't benefit from continuous back-to-back corrections — it makes the anxiety worse, not better. The pause gives your dog a moment to settle before the collar becomes active again. The digital display also shows a low-spray warning as you approach the 25-spray capacity, so you're not caught out with an empty canister mid-session.

That point is worth taking further than the feature. A dog who barks or panics because they have been left alone, or who is frightened of fireworks or thunder, is in distress rather than misbehaving, and no bark collar is the right answer for either — it adds something unpleasant to a situation the dog already cannot escape. Speak to your vet or a qualified behaviourist first.

Battery, charging, and water resistance

The Calmdogs Smart charges via Type-C — the same cable as most modern phones — and reaches full charge in about two hours. Charge only with a standard 5V charger; anything higher can damage the circuit and battery. Battery life is up to 15 days on normal use, though this varies depending on how often the collar triggers. It's IP65 rated for splash resistance, which covers rain, mud, and the enthusiastic water bowl drinker — but remove it before swimming or bathing. IP65 handles water from any direction at low pressure; it's not designed for submersion.

Refilling the spray

Follow the instructions printed on the refill can. Turn the collar off. Stand the collar's tank on a solid surface with its nozzle facing upward, hold the refill can vertically and place its needle into that nozzle. Press firmly for five seconds, checking that liquid is going into the tank, then press for a further ten. Keep the can upright throughout — refilling with it tipped over is the usual reason a fill does not take. Turn the collar back on.

Is it right for your dog?

The Calmdogs Smart is intended for healthy adult dogs over six months old, from 8 lbs to 120 lbs. It's not suitable for every dog though, and it's worth being honest about this before buying:

It's not recommended for aggressive dogs, breeds with long noses or very long necks (where the spray may not reach the muzzle), or dogs with a significantly reduced sense of smell — since the citronella spray relies on scent to work as intended. If you're unsure whether it suits your dog's temperament or breed, get in touch before ordering.

One more thing to know upfront: the citronella spray cartridge is sold separately. The beep and vibration modes work straight out of the box without it, but if you want spray functionality you'll need to purchase a cartridge. We stock compatible refills on Calmshops.

A quick care note: keep continuous wear under 12 hours, check your dog's neck weekly for any rash or irritation, and clean the neck area and the collar's sensor at the same time.

What stood out to us

The dual-signal detection is the feature that separates this from the other automatic collars in our range. Testing it with Figo, we didn't get a false trigger from outside noise — passing dogs, the postman, a particularly loud argument on the street — because the collar filtered out the background rather than reacting to every sound. The auto-pause after six consecutive triggers is the other thing we'd highlight: it suggests the collar was designed by someone who understood that anxious barking and deliberate barking are different problems, and that hammering a dog with continuous corrections for the former is counterproductive.
