RB&Co's Exit Diversion Door Wraps are an evidence-informed environmental tool that helps reduce exit-seeking behaviour, door testing, and sundowning-related agitation — without medication, restraint, or constant staff redirection.
Each wrap transforms an institutional-looking exit door into a warm, familiar scene that gently signals to residents: this is not a way out — this is home.
Why Exit Diversion Works
Residents living with dementia often experience confusion and anxiety around exits — particularly during late afternoon sundowning hours. The sight of a commercial-style door is itself a trigger, cueing the brain to exit-seek. Research in applied gerontology confirms that visually disguising exits with homelike imagery significantly reduces door-testing behaviours and decreases resident agitation.
Our designs are developed with these principles in mind:
No paths, gates, tunnels, or outdoor cues that suggest "a way out"
Warm, era-appropriate imagery resonant with residents born in the 1930s–1950s
High-contrast, visuospatially clear scenes that work with age-related perceptual changes
Homelike rather than clinical — reducing environmental triggers.
