Who’s Really No. 1?

This framed display reproduces the November 12, 1979 Sports Illustrated cover asking one of college football’s biggest questions of the season: “WHO’S REALLY No. 1?”

Nebraska running back Jarvis Redwine appears alongside Alabama quarterback Steadman Shealy, Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter, Florida State quarterback Jimmy Jordan, and Houston quarterback Delrick Brown. Each player raises a finger for No. 1, representing five programs in the national championship conversation. The portraits were photographed by noted Sports Illustrated photographer Rich Clarkson.

Redwine made an immediate impact in his first season playing for Nebraska. He rushed for 1,042 yards in 1979, earned first-team All-Big Eight honors, was named Big Eight Newcomer of the Year, and received All-America recognition. He was later inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.
