For a hedge that looks tailored instead of bulky, plant in a consistent line, keep a generous mulch strip underneath, and layer softer shapes in front like ornamental grasses or low mounding shrubs so the cherry laurel becomes a crisp green backdrop; if you prune, do it in spring or summer to encourage dense growth, and aim for a slightly wider base than top so light reaches the lower branches and it stays full from the ground up.
