These two Esquire magazine illustrations by George Petty pair telephone conversations with the suggestive humor familiar to the magazine’s readers. On one side, a gentleman in evening dress speaks into a receiver while the caption supplies the joke: a groom-to-be arranging his next rendezvous with his mistress for the day after his wedding.
On the reverse, a Petty Girl, nude except for heeled mules, explains to her caller why she can no longer pose for advertisements. Her elongated figure, softly shaded skin, and carefully drawn pose reflect the airbrush technique that became Petty’s signature.
Together, the illustrations offer a glimpse into Esquire’s blend of glamour, fashion, and adult humor, as well as Petty’s place in the history of American magazine illustration.
