Few bands have turned their own name into a holiday, but 311 did exactly that, and this handbill captures the celebration in its formative years. Promoting the band's '3-11 Day Celebration' at New Orleans' State Palace Theatre, with guests Jimmie's Chicken Shack, it embodies the high-voltage graphics of the turn-of-the-millennium rock poster revival.
Attributed to Mark Arminski on the basis of the small printed credit in the lower right, the design bears his hallmarks: deliberately coarse halftone dots, columns of loudspeaker cones framing the page, and a snarling green creature head with tentacle-like whiskers and bared fangs. Hot pink, molten orange, and acid green blaze against a black ground, while a Western woodtype display face for the venue name nods to old showbill traditions. The tongue-in-cheek line 'That's March Eleventh' adds a wink for the uninitiated.
Printed on card stock as a companion to the larger concert poster, the handbill bridges street-level promotion and collectible art. A standout piece for 311 devotees, collectors of modern gig posters, and anyone drawn to the vibrant New Orleans live music scene.
