Three faces merge into one in this arresting Family Dog mailer for Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Avalon Ballroom. A frontal portrait of a long-haired, bearded young man is flanked by two outward-facing profiles, fused into a Janus-like composite that feels both meditative and slightly uncanny. Attributed to the San Andreas Fault design group, with photography credited to Steve Rahn, the card marks a turning point in San Francisco poster design: away from hand-drawn swirls and toward photographic collage.

Below the faces, chunky outlined bubble lettering stacks the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sons of Champlin, Initial Shock, and Jerry Abrams' Head Lights light show, across a three-night Thanksgiving weekend run at Sutter and Van Ness. Printed in black halftone offset, the card was mailed by Family Dog Productions from its Gough Street office. The reverse carries an ornate pen-and-ink ribbon rising from the Family Dog medallion.

Numbered FD-147, it belongs to the final chapter of Chet Helms' Avalon era. A standout piece for collectors of the ballroom years and the bands that defined the San Francisco sound.
