A cat stares out of a vortex of warped grid lines, its whiskers flaring in hot pink against deep violet. This is Bob Fried's optical design for Buffalo Springfield at the Family Dog in Denver, one of the boldest images of the psychedelic ballroom era. Fried bends a photographic cat's face through a curving lattice that spirals at the ears and again beneath the muzzle, where the pink chin resolves into a hidden figure, a visual double take typical of the period's mind-bending graphics.

The silver border frames the image with blocky outlined lettering that runs around all four sides, giving dates, the West Evans address, and a light-show credit to Diogenes Lantern Works. Supporting act The Eighth Penny Matter appears below, in the charming period spelling 'EIGTH.' The reverse carries a flowing paisley stamp box and the Family Dog emblem.

Issued for Chet Helms's short-lived Denver outpost of the San Francisco scene, this card shows the Haight-Ashbury aesthetic spreading across the country in the late 1960s. A standout piece for collectors of Family Dog art and folk-rock history.
