Ruby and sapphire are the exact same stone, divided only by color. When it runs red, the world calls it a ruby. In every other shade, it is a sapphire.

• History: Rulers and warriors have claimed this gem for as long as it has been dug up. Medieval clergy wore blue sapphires to stand for heaven, and in old Persian belief the sky itself was said to be the reflection of a great sapphire beneath the earth. Ancient Sanskrit called the red ruby ratnaraj, king of precious stones, and Burmese warriors were said to set rubies under their skin before battle. The rarer shades, grey, pink, salmon, brown, are known as fancy sapphires, colors most people never learn exist.
• The Belief: One family, two reputations. The blue that kings and clergy wore, and the red that warriors carried, come from the same stone. Wearing it is wearing both.
