Carved from greenstone, with natural variation in colour and pattern from piece to piece, and available in a lighter or darker variant. Each large Hei Matau has a twisted, ridged upper shank that flows down into a smooth curved hook with an inward-curling barb, polished to a glossy finish. The Hei Matau takes the form of the stylised fish hook, worn for a vital connection to te moana (the sea), bringing protection and prosperity.
