Workwear but European, these are the absolute best garments available for your thirty-hour work week. Hi-vis, low-vis, benzoate blue, and bright red- you aren't just buying limp-wristed work pants; you're buying a taste of the other side. Poor souls; they waste all their tax revenues on healthcare and pensions. They could never afford to develop sick shit like the F-35, and it shows. Goofy-ass coloring for a silly, goofy country that "works"; haven't even seen a single kraut drive a King Ranch to the job site.

The Short & Sweet

  • Used German overalls, assorted brands and cuts
  • Some are flame-resistant/anti static
  • Heavy cotton, synthetics, misc twill, it's all possible
  • Cargo, tool, and knee pad pockets vary by pair

German work pants, or Arbeitshosen, are heavy-duty trousers built for the country’s industrial trades. Most pairs in this assortment are flame-resistant and anti-static.

German Workwear and the Multinorm Standard

Germany supplies some of Europe’s most demanding job sites, including chemical plants, utilities, foundries, and fabrication shops. Overalls made for those jobs are often called “multinorm” because they meet several European safety standards at once. The ratings you’ll most often find on the inside tags are EN ISO 11612 for heat and flame protection, EN 1149-5 for dissipating static electricity, and EN ISO 11611 for welding. Check the tag on your pair to see exactly which ratings it carries.

Fabric and Construction

Most pairs use a heavy twill that is mostly cotton, blended with polyester and a small amount of conductive fiber. That conductive thread is what lets the fabric bleed off static instead of building a charge. Fabrics in this class typically weigh around 280 g/m², or a little over 8 oz per square yard. Depending on the maker, features include thigh cargo pockets, ruler pockets, knee pad pockets, reinforced knees, double-stitched seams, and reflective strips. To keep the flame resistance working, wash without fabric softener or chlorine bleach.

Built for Sparks and Hard Use

Hobby welders, blacksmiths, and anyone running an angle grinder in a home garage need protection that won’t melt when hot metal lands on them, and nylon or poly-blend pants do exactly that. Campfire cooks and bushcrafters tired of finding spark holes in their hiking pants have the same problem. These also make solid everyday workwear for mechanics, farmhands, and woodshop owners who want deep pockets and tough knees. New multinorm trousers from European makers can cost well over $200, which makes a used pair one of the cheapest ways into real FR workwear.

Sizing German Work Pants

German pants use numbered sizes instead of inch measurements. Regular sizes run in even numbers such as 46, 48, and 50, with a size 50 fitting roughly a 34 to 35 inch waist. Short sizes (24 to 32) have a fuller waist and shorter leg, and long sizes (in the 90s and 100s) are cut slimmer and longer. Fit varies by brand, so please use our sizing guide.
