Dogon wooden headrests (known as bargu) featuring a carved male face and a distinct flat back or blocky pillar are highly sought-after artifacts created by the Dogon tribe in Mali.
Traditional pieces from this region—often influenced by the ancient Tellem style—are carved out of a single piece of hardwood. The distinct structural elements of this design serve a deep spiritual purpose:
  • The Flat Back / Column: Provides structural rigidity, functioning as a solid architectural anchor or pillar to elevate the slightly curved upper neck support.
  • The Male Face: Frequently features a characteristic linear nose, a squared or pointed chin beard (indicative of an elder or an ancestral figure), and tightly integrated geometric forms.
  • The Purpose: In Dogon cosmology, the human head holds a person's spiritual essence (kikinu). These supports elevated the head to prevent it from touching the dirt and to protect the dreamer's soul from wandering spirits while preserving intricate hairstyles.
